The animation itself deconstructs: all the fine details, the anime style, everything is stripped away as Shinji floats in his subconscious searching for answers to unanswerable questions. Rarely have I seen images so surreal outside of an art gallery as the interludes where Shinji, Asuka, and Rei (in particular), think on their actions and circumstances. The finale ends in abstract expressionist dream world with the entire cast clapping for a catatonic boy, once he has come to terms with murdering a God in the form of a boy he loved. The log-line is populist (preteens fight ambiguous Godzillas in mechs), for sure, but the way the story played out? Hardly.
#NEON GENESIS EVANGELION EPISODE 19 DUB SERIES#
This series is through and through art-house, in every sense of the word. I was not of age for this event, but looking back on the series, it is a total shock that it was so popular. The complex pedigree of the big pictures came to the small screen. It descended into the deep waters of the unconscious and returned with the bar held high above water. Regardless of personal reactions, the influence of Neon Genesis Evangelion cannot be denied. “From within that state of affairs,” Hiroki wrote, “Anno Hideaki’s ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ suddenly appeared.”

Oshii Mamoru’s fantastic Ghost in the Shell proved that the tradition was dead. “Overwhelmingly in the last 10 years, when compared to the hugeness of its market,” Azuma Hiroki wrote, “It’s hard to believe how dead and barren Japanese anime as a whole has become.” Even the post-Akira milestones felt at odds with the tradition of anime.

Anime in particular saw a decline after the monumental Akira. And then, after 1970, something stifled production. Its productions in film and other media sought nostalgia, redemption in the face of a new, ever changing world and economy. For years, post-war Japan flourished artistically. It may be said that for the world of anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion was as a great of an impact to the genre. The survivors call this event the Second Impact. Is that why the angels are attacking us?”īefore the turn of the century, an explosion leveled the earth, darkened the sky, and swept away most of the human race. “I wonder if man is a special creature because of that. “Mankind fears the darkness and scrapes it away with fire to survive.” I tried watching the dub, I will explain how that went later on. I have watched the remastered director’s cut edition, subbed. This analysis of the show only it does not include the subsequent films that have expanded the story, nor any other spin off. If you have not seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, I recommend that you do, immediately. It will cover all of the major plot developments in detail, and thus, this piece will spoil the entire story. This is an analysis of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
